Layoffs @ Relic and Vigil

Posted in Relic by on March 29th, 2012

I’m sad to report that THQ has laid off 39 employees from Relic along with 79 employees from Vigil Games. The reason for the layoffs is that THQ is scaling back Dark Millennium Online from an MMO to a single player/multi player game.

Warhammer 40K MMO no longer massive, THQ lays off 118 in transition

I wish them the best of luck.

I certainly hope that THQ didn’t fire (Sorry for using the more distasteful, though honest, word for laying off employees) any staff that Relic and Vigil hadn’t hired specifically for this project’s MMO segments… otherwise they really have no idea what they’re doing.

Is THQ going to stop there, though? Usually, when one major part of a game’s plan is cancelled, the rest of it gets pulled too. Then, when the League of Evil — I mean, board of directors – feels unhappy about “wasting money,” they blame it on their constituent parts (when the board was the one to blame for turning it into a waste of money in the first place) and terminate them to “increase efficiency.”

Let’s hope that doesn’t happen, I suppose. It’d be a shame to see something of actual value be eradicated so pointlessly.
