Relicnews: the definitive source for all things Relic

Welcome to the new Relicnews

Posted in Relicnews by on July 17th, 2005

Sites in this community have something of a tradition of taking a long time over things. Remember the Guidestone? Remember Project Red? With such a glorious history to live up to, it would have been almost vulgar to launch on time.

Well, it’s been over a year in the making.

It’s been through two servers and three different content-management systems.

It’s been the bane of my existence for months.

Welcome to the new Relicnews.

A few points about the new site. Firstly, it runs off Wordpress, a free, open-source content-management system. It’s PHP/MySQL based, and runs on Delphy’s wonderful server. The design was created and coded by yours truly, and the old content was imported through a mixture of sneaky scripts and massive amounts of elbow grease. We don’t have everything, but it’s pretty close—all the old news posts and articles from the last iteration of the site, bar one or two, are here somewhere. We’ve tried to strip out all the tag soup we can find, but all those old news posts still have a fair bit of excess, invalid markup; in general, it’s not a real problem, but if you see weird characters where quotation marks or apostrophes should be, that’s why.

I have to express my enormous gratitude to the fantastic team I’ve had helping me on this project. Delphy has saved our bacon on numerous occasions, writing scripts to import content and display recent forum threads, as well as setting up and administering the server. Moe has worked like a Trojan, editing and importing content, writing a load of new articles, and pointing out all my coding mistakes. Pike mostly slept, occasionally waking up to ask me why the site wasn’t ready yet. Lastly, my thanks to all the people who contributed articles, tested the site, and generally got under my feet at inopportune moments.

If you find anything broken, it’s Moe’s fault.

We aren’t very bright, we need great big buttons so we know how to post news. They’re for staff, not the public. You can’t register, but the site saves a cookie that will keep your details for a while, so you won’t have to keep typing in your name and email address.
